Who we are

UK Home Energy Guide is an independent project providing free energy guidance for UK homeowners using publicly available government data.

What data we process

Property data (EPC, Land Registry)

When you search for a postcode or view a property page, we query government APIs in real time to fetch Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data and Land Registry sale records. We display this data on the page but we do not store it. Each page view makes a fresh API request.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) considers EPC data to be personal data under UK GDPR. Our lawful basis for displaying this data is legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR):

• The data is already published by government on public registers
• We help homeowners understand their own property's energy performance
• We add context (savings estimates, improvement options) that serves the public interest
• We don't store, profile, or cross-reference the data with other personal information
• The privacy impact is minimal — the same data is available on gov.uk, Rightmove, and Zoopla

EPC data for England and Wales comes from the MHCLG EPC Open Data Register under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Scottish EPC data comes from Energy Saving Trust / Scottish EPC Register. Land Registry Price Paid Data is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Analytics cookies

If you accept cookies, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how people use the site — which pages are visited, how long people stay, and what devices they use. GA4 uses cookies to distinguish between visitors. See our Cookie Policy for details.

We do not load any analytics or tracking until you explicitly accept cookies. If you decline, no cookies are set and no data is collected.

What we don't collect

• We don't ask for your name, email, or any personal details
• We don't have user accounts or login
• We don't use contact forms or newsletters (yet)
• We don't sell or share any data with third parties for marketing
• We don't use retargeting, social media pixels, or advertising cookies

Affiliate links

Some links on this site go to third-party providers (solar installers, EPC assessors, etc.). When you click these links and make a purchase or booking, we may earn a commission. This is how we keep the site free.

When you click an affiliate link, the destination website will have its own privacy policy governing how they handle your data. We recommend reading their policy before providing any personal information.

We track affiliate link clicks using Google Analytics custom events (category, provider name). This tells us which links are useful to visitors but does not identify you personally.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access — ask what data we hold about you (in practice, we hold none beyond anonymous analytics)
• Object — ask us to stop displaying your property's EPC data on our site
• Erasure — since we don't store EPC data, there is nothing to erase from our systems. If you want EPC data removed from the government register itself, contact MHCLG
• Withdraw consent — you can withdraw cookie consent at any time by clearing your browser's local storage or using your browser's cookie settings
• Complain — you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)

If you want your property excluded from our site, email hello@ukhomeenergyguide.co.uk and we will add your property to an exclusion list within 30 days.

Data security

The site is served over HTTPS. We use Vercel for hosting (EU/UK data centres) and Supabase for minimal operational data (feature configuration only — no personal data). We do not operate a database of property or user information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top will change when we do. For significant changes, we'll show a notice on the site.
